Dear Campbell,

Well, the Colts didn’t fair so well on Sunday and neither did you.  You really loved seeing everyone from house church, but between your 4th tooth and solid poops you were a bit grumpy.  Every time you go to have a bm, you push really hard, start crying, then push again.  My heart breaks for you in these moments.  I can only imagine it will be really hard to see you skin your knees or fall down.  And I can’t even imagine the first time you get your heart broken or experience an injustice.

I know I say this a ton, but you continue to get more and more fun.  You continue to peek at us and it is so fun to see you realize that there are objects beyond whatever is blocking your view.  You’ve also started rocking a ton.  I hear this means you will be crawling soon.  Eek!

The past few times I have gone into your room to get your from your crib, you have been playing with Cat in the Hat.  You manage to scoot up the top of the crib to get him.  Sometimes you fall asleep holding him and wake up talking to him.  :)

Dear Campbell,

Big things are happening in Indianapolis right now!  The Colts are going to the super bowl!  This really has no affect on you at all, beyond potentially altering your night time routine on Sunday.

I am not a football fan, but I love seeing people united for a common cause.  The camaraderie that sports provide is a new phenomenon to me, but I’m happy your daddy introduced me to it!

While this is an exciting time in Indianapolis, it makes me desire so much more for you.  I hope and pray some day that you will find a community of like minded people who desire to create real and sustainable change in this world.

Your stinkiness has continued this week.  Instead of being greeted with a big smile at Mrs. Liz’s, you show that you’re excited to see me briefly by throwing your hands into the air and then usually proclaim some kind of unpleasantness.  It could be for a myriad of reasons, but all it makes me feel is that you are somehow frustrated with me.  Which leads me to believe we are going to start going through separation anxiety-the one thing I truly fear as a parent.

Dear Campbell,

Ever since you’ve started eating big people food-like oatmeal, avocado, and bananas-your diapers have started to stink more and more.  I think it’s because your stinkers have become more stinky.

In addition to this, you have also started some stinky behavior, like wiping your avocado holder on the laundry basket and my sweatshirt (though you do stop when I tell you no) AND grabbing anything within reach (Daddy’s desk is a dangerous place for both him and you)!

If this is a sign of things to come, I can only imagine what a lovable stinker you will be!

Dear Campbell,

Well, you managed to get Mommy and Daddy sick.  Your upper respiratory infection led to your ear infection.  All the while we caught the respiratory infection which turned into a sinus and double ear infection for me and bronchitis for your daddy.  I got the pink stuff (like you!) and your daddy got a different anti-biotic.  My hope is that by Friday we’ll all be feeling better.

Your daddy took your 6 month pictures today.  They are absolutely fabulous and filled with your incredibly cute and attractive face.

Here is just a sampling:

You weren’t SUPER sad, just tired of having your picture taken.  I am pretty sure the picture after this one is of you smiling at me.  :)

You’ve started feeding yourself.  It’s pretty wonderful.  You love avocado and bananas way more than anything else you’ve eaten so far.  And both foods are nice because we don’t have spoon feed you!

I love you, my sweetie pie!  You get more fun every day!

Dear Campbell,

Today you had your 6 month appointment, only you didn’t get any shots because you have an ear infection.  As it turns out, it looks like the whole family has about the same thing only you don’t have real sinuses yet.  That means that since your non-existent sinuses can’t really get infected, your ears did.  Needless to say, we are all tired and a little more grumpy than normal at 4538 Kingsley Drive.

Today you weighed about 16 pounds, 3 ounces.  You are approximately 27 inches long!  This puts you in the 60th percentile for weight and 80th percentile for height.  This could explain your super chubby arms and slender torso.  You have to make up for the disparage in your percentiles somehow!

Dr. Stein was also very impressed with your developmental skills.  Yay!  He said not worry that you still haven’t rolled over because you can sit up unsupported, which is a much more difficult skill.  He is happy you can grab things and transfer from hand to hand.  I didn’t tell him you can turn pages in books and push yourself around on your back, you know I don’t like to brag too much!

We just got home from picking up your first prescription-amoxycillin-and I’m happy to report you seemed to enjoy it.  :)

My hope for the next 48 hours is some picking up, dinner preparation, and relaxing.  I also pray that we all get some good sleep soon!

Dear Campbell,

Even though you have been sick for about a week, it hasn’t affected your desire to play very much.  You LOVE to play.  It is so fun!

Right now, we can get the biggest laughs from you by tossing you in the air.  Sometimes we shoot you up like a rocket, other times we pretend you are a gigantic football and throw you up on your back.  If we need some time to ourselves, you can keep yourself entertained in your exersaucer for up to an hour.  That’s pretty impressive given your age.

Your favorite tried and true toys are books, balls, and blankets.  I love how some things are timeless.  I can imagine your grandparents playing with a ball or having a book read to them over 60 years ago.  It makes me happy to know that you enjoy the same activities that other children have enjoyed for centuries.

You have learned the Goodnight, Moon means bedtime.  When we get the book out for you, you lift your arms in excitement and open the cover.  You have gotten so good at turning pages that I have a hard time keeping up with you.

Right now, you are hanging out on the bed next time looking at one of your cloth Dr. Seuss books while Daddy watches the NFC championship game.  (You watched the Colts game with him and helped cheer them on to the superbowl in your Colts jacket!)  I’m enjoying your company AND your calm breathing.  From time to time you look at me and give me a big smile. :)

Dear Campbell,

You are 6 months and 2 days old!  I keep saying to myself, how did that happen?  I saw a baby yesterday who weighed about 9 pounds and had the thought I fear the most . . . I said to myself, “I can’t believe Campbell was ever that small!”  You have grown to be such a big girl right before my eyes!

On Monday you became truly sick for the very first time.  I was certain you had pneumonia.  Or at least a serious case of bronchitis.

You actually just have a minor upper respiratory virus.  I would hate to see what something serious would be considering how hard it’s been on me for you to be “minorly” sick.  I do have to say, though, that you are still super sweet in spite of your illness.  Today Mrs. Liz told me you are super easy.  To hear that was music to my ears, I was so afraid you were going to give her a hard time!

Something exciting has been happening recently.  You are always SUPER excited to see me if I have been gone for a while!  When I come to pick you up from Mrs. Liz, you always get a big smile on your face then throw your hands in the air and slap them repeatedly on your chunky thighs.  Both Daddy and Mrs. Liz say that this is a special welcome for me.  I love it.

My prayer for you

Dear Campbell,

One of the things I most looked forward to in being a mommy is getting to see the kind of person God created you to be.  I often read verses in the Bible and think, “I hope Campbell is this . . .”  I hope you are a person who seeks justice and righteousness.  I hope you experience the joy of Christ and it radiates from you.  I hope your feet travel to far off lands to love other people like Jesus loves us.

While at church on Sunday, a particular verse struck me and I felt like God whispered to me, “I want you to pray this over Campbell before she goes to bed every night.”  So I am going to memorize it and do what He told me to.  In addition to the many other hopes I have for you, I pray you think about whatever is noble and right and pure and lovely and admirable and put what you learn and receive into practice.  And I know that the God of peace will be with you.  I pray you recognize Him.

Dear Campbell,

It is 2:26 AM and I decided to put off sleep for a few minutes to write you this letter.  My darling, you are truly sick for the very first time.  You’ve had fevers before, but nothing accompanied them other than teeth.  Tonight a nasty cough and vomiting are present.  You seem to be taking it well.  You aren’t quite yourself in the sense that you are a little more spacey than normal, BUT you are still very happy.  It doesn’t seem to be bother you in the least.

I, on the other hand, am a wreck.  I keep turning you on to your side because I fear what would happen if you threw up in your sleep.  Your daddy has set the alarm for me to wake up every 3 hours to feed you so you don’t get dehydrated.  I appeared worried enough Daddy put the pack and play in our room so I could hear you at all times.  You fell asleep 10 minutes ago, but I wanted to stay up just a little longer to be reassured you would be OK.

First thing in the morning I am calling Dr. Stein.  His office opens at 8 and I will just keep dialing until someone answers the phone.

Dear Campbell,

Just a few things this time . . .

1) I have no idea how to contain your squealing.  How do you discipline an almost 6 month old?  I try telling you no in a no nonsense tone, but you just look at me, smile, and then squeal in my face.

2) You are super cute and know it.  I think you are beautiful as well, but this whole getting stopped constantly by strangers is a bit overwhelming.  By the end of ImagingUSA I was over it.  I feel bad writing that, but I just want to let you know that all the attention you got at the convention helped me become immune to your charms.  (Though sometimes I still have to turn away so you don’t see my smile reflect my love and enjoyment.)

3) One more thing involving squealing, you started childcare with Mrs. Liz yesterday.  Mrs. Liz has a baby named Benjamin who is 5 months older than you.  You two have become fast friends and spend your lunch time squealing at each other.  I hope to get it on video sometime.
